History of Sapporo beer
It was founded in 1876 under the name Kaitakushi Brewery, and its two major competitors were Japan Brewery and Osaka (eventually Asahi, the third major brand along with Kirin).
In 1906 they decided to join forces to form a large brewing group. They did so under the name of Dai Nippon, which controlled the Japanese market until World War II, when they split in two, Nippon and Asahi. It later became the well-known Sapporo brand.
Today it handles a wide variety of beverages including wines, soft drinks and other refreshments. Its presence in Canada is due to the acquisition of the Sleeman brewery group, to enter the American market, very much given to the soft and light beers like Sapporo.
